Loud Library

So I come to the library today sit down and get onto the internet, a few minutes later and two people decide to come in and immediately they get on their phones.  I immediately think to myself:

Why are you here making all this noise?

I mean seriously, this is just not the place for that.  There are plenty of books that you could read, or even get on one of the public computers if you don’t have one of your own.  There are even areas for you to sit in at a local Safeway but yet you choose to come here and disturb others with this foolishness.

Would it kill you to just sit down and shut up?

Oh, and if i say anything to you about it, then we have the likelihood of confrontation. But it doesn’t have to be that way You could just be mindful of others and take your conversation elsewhere.

Other patrons look and I am sure they feel as I do.  This is also one of those times when none of the librarians will randomly walk in to check on things and correct the problem.

Good, they left.

LOL!! Looks like I spoke too soon.  It’s like that movie “We’re back!” except this isn’t exactly a dinosaurs story.

You know what…..I don’t have to take this…I’m going home.

My confession

So I walk into a supermarket to get something to drink.  When something wonderful catches my eye.

No silly not that.

I’m talking about Gelato.  Raspberries and Cream to be more specific.  Anyway I decide to try it because it sounded like something new.

I tasted it and it was indeed delicious so delicious I thought to myself…….

Am I dreamin’?

Then I notice that it tastes mighty familiar.  I decide to look it up to see what it was and surprise…..

Gelato is italian for ice cream!

I thought to myself, “seriously”? For it was a serious “duh” moment.  So I just had to write about it.

You know what makes this worse?  I am lactose intolerant.  So I am hoping that the Empire will not in fact strike back.

Good grief!

Stuck

So I wait and wait for the bus.  It finally comes.  Mind you, its a muggy summer day a day that normally I would love.

If I only had a brain

I would have never gotten on the bus that would take me the opposite direction from my house.

Wish I knew that from the start.  Well, at first it wasn’t so bad after all i did have a seat. Unfortunately it didn’t take long for the bus to become a crowded mass of bodies.  One lady gets on the bus with a laundry cart.

Genius, pure genius.

Meanwhile there is kid that just wouldn’t shut up.  He just kept crying and crying, and crying….I thought it would never stop.  All this and mind you I have on headphones.

Well, at least no one was cursing each other out.

Two hours pass by and I finally get close to a good subway station. I decide to get off the bus and get a nice old fashioned fish sandwich.

I figured at least i would get something worthwhile out of it.

Sike!!

Little did I know that my dream would be deferred. The fish place was closed.

At this point I am still OK because I was close to the subway that would take me home.  Take me home, take me home home take me to another place, take me home.

You get the point.

I pay my fare go down the escalator and to my surprise there is a delay on the train and there is no estimated arrival.

Its that that point that i was like seriously?  I can’t go home for nuffin!

I walk around for a bit then decide to just catch a bus instead.  Finally, a bus shows up I get on and i go to another subway station.

Feeling good.

Then, I have to use the bathroom just great. By this point I had decided this was good material for my blog so here it is.

Maybe I’ll eat out tonight after all.

Wonderful time in Addis

addisSometimes its good to try something new,  to allow oneself to experience the cuisine of another culture.  Of this I encourage you to take the opportunity to do so.

Yes, there will be food you don’t like, you will have your likes and dislikes.  You may even food you never want to eat again, but at least once you have tried it so you can intelligently say that you don’t like it.

Thankfully today I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Addis Ababa Restaurant in Silver Spring, Maryland.  I had already made the decision that day that I would try Ethiopian food and despite other possibilities I stuck to my choice.

So I went in the restaurant and the waitress was truly a lovely woman.  Certainly not a Liberian girl for she was from the other side of the continent but I think you get the point.

I asked for a menu and when I got it I was happy to see something that sounded good to me:  Yebeg Tibs.

addis2

I chose Yebeg Tibs because I love to eat lamb (sorry lamb chop) and like I mentioned before, I wanted to try something new.

I sit down and take in the ambiance of the restaurant.  It was nice and quiet, with no one else in there, which I liked a whole lot.

A whole, whole lot!!!

Yeah, I know, you’re probably gonna say that if a restaurant is empty, then it must not be very good. As you have probably figured out by now.  That just wasn’t true this time.

Soon thereafter the food arrives and my, my, my, did it look good.  And the flavor was so good, so good that i have decided to thank James for it.

Thank you James!!!

Too bad you can’t hear me right now, but maybe I can thank you later.

I digress while I digest, quite literally speaking.

In the basket at the top of the picture is a basket filled with Injera bread. They were rolled up and the food rested on an unrolled piece of bread as well.  The chopped tomatoes went very well with the lamb meat in the middle.

My goodness It was some kind of wonderful!

Speaking of wonderful, remember when I mentioned before that the waitress was very beautiful, well because of that I felt as though I was 30 going on 13 as a result.

Talk about an interesting experience!!

With all of that said it should be painfully obvious that I will most certainly go back to Addis Ababa restaurant

I Gawr-On-Tee!!!

Thank you Justin, it seemed most appropriate to give a shout out to him since I used to watch him on Cajun Gourmet cooking show when I was little.  That was something that he would say and it brings back warm memories just like my lunch today has as well.

Anthony finds more Persimmon trees

Yes, we’re gonna start on a bad note, like Reuben Studdard once said:

I’m Sorry!!

I am sad to report the lost of two Persimmon trees that once existed along a fence of Nicholas Orem Middle School in Hyattsville, Maryland. There was once a small playground there and the two trees were close to each other and I recall them bearing fruit during the winter. These are the two trees that I spoke of in a previous post, and going to the area years later I could see that where they were was nothing but a large expanse of mud. The small church/school that was once next door was now a large Montessori school. I used to live in the area right down the street so I would walk by them pretty often but for somehow I never thought to collect the fruit and plant the seeds, for then my project would have been in full swing a long time ago.

Although not exactly in a galaxy far, far, far, far, far away

Now that you have heard the bad news, let me share with you some good news: Not far from Prince Georges Plaza station there are six Persimmon trees with lots and lots of fruit. Its funny since I came across those trees over ten years ago before the building of a mall when that was just a large parking lot. I only remember one or two trees but once I saw them I decided to look around and to my surprise there were 4 more each appeared to be planted in twos. This made sense because the Persimmon is a tree that needs another one nearby in order to be properly pollinated.

Thankfully I was able to collect several pounds of Persimmon fruit. They are safely in my refrigerator and soon I will separate the pulp from the seeds and store them to stratify in the fridge over the winter. Once the winter is over, I will remove them and plant the seeds in some seed trays where hopefully they will germinate. In addition to the ones I sprout at home, I will be planting the seeds at a number of locations. In fact, this reminds me that I ought to label the location that I collected the Persimmons as well as time of year and pictures of the tree if possible.

I am choosing to do that with the goal of encouraging genetic diversity among the resulting seedlings. Since I have hundreds of seeds already and more to be collected over the winter there will be no shortage of Persimmon trees in the years to come. Your gonna like this project:

I guarantee it!!

Other locations where I have been pleasantly surprised to find Persimmon trees are in the Takoma neighborhood of DC, near the Takoma Aquatic Center. As well as Along Canal Rd in Northwest DC adjacent to the Palisades neighborhood. There are several persimmon trees growing along a stone wall, the best way to reach the fruit would actually involve going in the water to the narrow strip of land that is between the wall and a bike/walk trail.

One day while walking around minding my business, near 16th st. I came across a……you guessed it yet another Persimmon tree. It looked rather lonely sitting all there all by itself so I told her that you’ve got a friend in me.

Outstanding!!

Hopefully there are more trees to be found and lots more fruit to collect. So stay tuned for more updates on that as I assure you it will be something like a phenomenon.

Rant about stuck up people

What a wonderful time I had the other day on the island. As the sun was about to set I heard the hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo of a Great Horned Owl. I ended up finding a huge asian snail sitting on the beach, and I decided to take some pictures of it that also highlighted my hitch-hikers thumb.

It’s times like this that I am so grateful for, to be free of the rat-race of life most have to endure on a day to day basis.

I realize of course, that for some it is by necessity and not choice that they work full-time, and so I don’t fault anyone for it. But as for me, I choose to “think different”. Yes, it means no GS this or GS that but thats just fine with me. I have worked my share of jobs over the past decade to know exactly what it is that I don’t want to do.

I mention that because a few years ago I was hanging out with friend and some folks he knew, it was annoying for them to talk about the GS level they were on and they had these beaming smiles as they said it…..

And then it was my turn….so Anthony, what do you do for a living?

It was indeed an awkward moment. I paused and said that I was unemployed and got the condescending response….

“Oh, that’s too bad”.

It wasn’t even just the tone of her voice it was the look I got it was like oh, look at him isn’t he so pitiful. All I was trying to do was to spend time with some new people. To not be a part of an exclusive clique.

Talk about lowered expectations. Do you think I ever hung out with those boogie people again? No I didn’t! If one measures success by the size of ones paycheck, then I’m just not a part of that club.

Nosireebob!!!

They turned out to be someone that I used to know….somebody.

Anyway you keep on runnin’ out of my life if you subscribe to that foolishness, cause guess what? While you’re at work, waiting and waiting as the minutes/hours pass by I am actually doing something I enjoy….Like going for walks, enjoying nature, or spending time with my mother and sister, you see those are things that bring me joy not no fancy cars or diamond rings which are not forever by the way.

I have been teased before for not attending a four year college……but I am glad I didn’t. I don’t have that level of debt to be concerned about, nor do I want it. As a result I have a measure of freedom many dream of but never get.

I mean, what’s the point of making lots of money, if you have virtually no time to enjoy it. Mo’ money really does equal mo’ problems when you think of it. As a result a simple life in my opinion is the way to go.

Of course, I have no qualms with hard work. I respect a person that works to make an honest living. I just don’t like those that have some cushy job that they got because of their parents. In fact, I feel sorry for them because they are spoiled brats and the truth is that the joke is indeed on them.

it’s just a shame they don’t see it that way.

Anthony rants about Air-conditioning

This post has been months in the making.  Something that has been on my mind for a long time that I think is absolutely retarded.

What is the deal with the Air-conditioning being on in a library when its only 73 degrees F or 23 degrees C outside.

Its not even hot outside!!!!

Is this an isolated incident?  Noooo. Not at all!  This summer in Washington DC has been pretty weak as far as summers go.  And yet people are so desperate to make it cold everywhere i go, whether its at the library, on the bus in stores, practically everywhere.

Seriously.  I understand that being outside on a 90 degree day can be extremely uncomfortable especially when you are wearing a full suit for example.  The sun just seems to beam down on you with an intensity that is nothing to be reckoned with. So it is quite understandable that you don’t want to be covered in sweat as that feels absolutely disgusting.  Yet, rather than adapting business attire to the local climate, which is in this case Humid Subtropical, we try to shoehorn clothing that was designed with a much cooler climate in mind.

Intelligent I think not!!!

Washington DC like many cities in various latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere gets hot in the Summer. It just does.  Thats the long and the short of it, and while I understand that one doesn’t want to be hot, I feel as though the term “Air-conditioning” or the shortened form AC is a misnomer.  Why do I say so?  Well for one thing, everywhere I have been that has the AC on isn’t merely cooler than the outside temperature which would make perfect sense, the problem is that its cold.

Do you seriously mean to tell me in 2014 that we cannot have a better way of regulating our temperature?  I seriously doubt it.

So please, people give me a break and stop the nonsense already.  Besides I hear that Greenland is nice this time of year. Not to mention plenty of space to stretch out in as well.  🙂
