Childhood memories and Persimmons in DC

persimmontagI have been interested in native edible plants ever since I came across the book “Stalking the Wild Asparagus” by Euell Gibbons.  This would have been around the year 1995 which means I would have been about eleven years old at the time. Two of the plants that I recall from that book are the Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) and the Pawpaw (Asimina triloba).

You could say this was all because of my mother, who took me to various libraries when I was a child and so  I was able to explore a world far beyond anywhere i could get to physically.  This was a time before the Internet became a ubiquitous part of everyday life and folks actually read books.  Literal books in which you actually have to literally turn the page to get to the next thought.  It was a tactile thing.  As a result from a very early age I loved to read and it was one of my favorite things to do. Those books in turn motivated me to explore the outdoors near my home and over years I have learned so much from that.  The curious child that grew into the curious adult. I have been able to learn things that the vast majority of my peers just don’t and it’s given me an appreciation for the natural world that again sadly, most people I come in contact with just don’t have so for that.

Thanks MOM!!!!

In fact, it still is although now I find myself reading from my laptop or iPad screen than an actual book.  I am always amazed at how much things change but yet they stay the same at the same time.

What a wonderful life!!!

So anyway, last week I decided to visit the National Arboretum of Washington DC.  This was a place I loved to come to years ago when I moved to N.E. DC.  I would spend hours there sometimes with friends and sometimes by myself.   I recall walking down the street to Heart Pond and looking at all the beautiful Koi that was in the water.  I also remember seeing a Northern Water Snake.  It was in one of the few tributaries of the Anacostia to survive to modern times called Hickey Run.  I promise it wasn’t a romantic walk that ended with a kiss by the way it was just me enjoying a nice long walk…..

All by myself!!!

Anyway I came across a truly magnificent Persimmon tree (diospyros virginianum).  I could easily recognize it from its rather knobby bark. Unfortunately it seemed to be leaning like the tower of Pisa which I hope doesn’t spell a quick demise for it.

That would be quite sad  😦

What I saw next you’ll just have to wait and see, but it was quite surprising.

A random life

I have probably said it before but I’m gonna say it again. I have a very interesting life! I mean, just when I think things are going to be rather ordinary something happens out of nowhere that’s rather unpredictable.

Like today for instance, I was just minding my business and not loungin’ when all of a sudden….it starts raining, I mean it wasn’t ordinary rain, it was that serious buckets being dumped from the sky kind of rain.

Goodness, it made me change my plans for the evening. Just the same I promise that I’m not gonna cry, I’m not gonna cry cause its just not worth it.

Thought you knew what was gonna come next. Aha! I fooled you!

Suddenly it’s like pink cookies in a plastic bag getting crushed by buildings. Random? Yes, I digress.

So then, I was waiting for the bus to carry me home when I decide to listen to some music on my phone. I ended up on Brandy “sittin’ on top of the world” when lo’ and behold’ I decide to read the comments below the video. In fact here….see for yourself!

ROTFL!!!!!!

I was laughing so hard at the comments from Arlene. I was like “Really doh! Dog chow?”

Then I could hear it and it was even funnier.

Now, in her defense,
someone saying dog chow at the beginning of the video or even better “meow mix” would have been hilarious, but it would have to be like a whisper.

Pardon my pups

Pardon my pups

Rarely is it that I actually post on a Sunday as I am generally with family all day but today things are rather different.  So I decided to sit here and write something unsure of what I would do at all but confident that something would indeed come to mind.

Aha! I’ve got an idea, since I have mentioned that I have a rather random life what would fit better than a bulldog on a skateboard?

Isn’t that just awesome!!

This is a pretty old picture that I took with a cellphone by the way so please pardon my pups when it comes to the quality of it.

This happened to be before I got my iPad 3, which would have taken a way better picture, but of course would be rather awkward to pull out all of a sudden to capture this image. Not to mention how foolish I would look to be in the middle of the sidewalk to get it.

Not that it’s ever stopped me before!!

Maybe you would like it if you saw me do some basic work on this picture with a program called Gimp?

See, isn’t that just a little bit better?

Tell ya what, I’ll try again and mess with it again

bulldog20120329_1749082LOL! that was fun!

I haven’t forgotten about you

told you I love nature

told you I love nature

I know this year I have written the fewest posts since I started back in Summer of 2011, but please be assured that I am not stopping this journey of blogging.  I just got hit with a period where I just didn’t feel very motivated to write very much.

You’ll probably be happy to hear then that I have several posts that I am working on now and they will be available soon.  I am also hoping to be able to do at least three posts per week.

In the meantime however, there is plenty of material here already.  So much that it would take you quite some time to read it all.  Thousands of posts that either I wrote personally or reposted that I think you will enjoy quite a bit.

Whether its talking about my childhood spent outdoors that I need to expand upon, my love for Linux, or just random rants  such as this and that  .  I also love to write about my fondness of nature   I have no doubt there is something for everything in what I write.

With that being said:

Don’t you….forget about me!
