Heterodon platirhinos

Sounds cool but I have never seen one in person


Snakes. Snakes. Snakes!

I’ve been working on herpetology for a while now, moving the whole of the reptile and amphibian section of the site from one place to another. There’s a lot of emphasis on snakes. We have a popular snake identification guide for the varmints in the state. No, I don’t mean the Florida politicians. (Ba-dum-CHING)

bw_heterodon_platyrhinus1Which brings me to the Heterodon platirhinos, or Eastern Hognose Snake. Now, we have opossum here in Florida, which are quite famous for playing dead when confronted. But the Heterodon platirhinos puts those furry marsupials to shame with the sheer drama of their death act. William Shatner might even step back, shake his head, and say that it’s a little over the top.
