Ubuntu 12.04 awfully slow on Oracle VirtualBox

Sometime ago, I had setup an Ubuntu (12.04) virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox. The installation went smoothly, but I felt it was really slow as compared to the previous version of Ubuntu (10.x) I was using. In case you too are feeling the lag, follow the steps below to speed things up!

Steps:

1) In case you’re already running the virtual machine, shut it down first.

2) Open Oracle VirtualBox, and highlight (or single click) on your virtual machine in the list. Go to Settings –> System –> Processor
Increase the number of processors. I selected 2 in my case. A warning maybe displayed if you do this, and it maybe safe to ignore it in our case.

3) Go to Settings –> System –> Motherboard. In the “Extended features” section, make sure that “Enable IO APIC” is enabled.
