Fern Patch

It isn’t too often these days you leap across a nice patch of ferns in the woods. Not in the suburbs anyway. Hickory and I took a closer look at these and brought them back to Miz Flora.

She proceeded to tell me she’s no expert, then said, “I seem to remember a story about fronds that narrow at each end.”

I checked. These fronds narrowed at the base the same as the tip.

“So these must be New York Ferns.”

“How do you get that from the narrowing,” I asked her.

“Busy city people, staying up all hours of the night, burn their candles at both ends.”

I sure hope that makes sense to some of our human readers.
