Erno is not my friend

A couple of months ago I was trying to install Linux Mint 13 Mate edition into my Dell Optiplex SX, (yes, I know its old as dirt, but it was a gift!) and sometime during the installation I would get an error message.

I would have a picture of that message but it was in the phone that I lost hours ago :(.

It did say something like the Hard drive was old and that as a result it wouldn’t be able to install the Operating System.  I had burned the .iso file onto two separate DVDs just in case I made a mistake with one.  Yet, neither one would do what it was told.

“errno 5 – input/output error” when trying to install

To be honest, I thought that was absolutely stupid so I tried it again and again, and again.  I even made an installation USB drive with Unetbootin in and tried it again cause if at first you don’t succeed……..

Yes! you guessed it, I tried again,  although it took a lot for me to keep that PC back in one piece afterwards.

So, yesterday after finally getting out of the house…..(Thanks Sandy!!!!!)  I sat and wondered why oh why oh why?, while online and looked up the problem.  As it turns out I wasn’t the only one.

No I am not singing that song.

So, I came across tips that would get things going the way I wanted and one was to remove some of the memory install the desired OS and then put the memory back in.   I didn’t do that.

So now you’re probably wondering what I did do and not what do I do, so I will tell you.    What I decided to do was to take a Live DVD that I had from a magazine called Linux User and Developer, and to try an older version of Linux Mint.  Linux Mint 10 to be exact, and it worked!

Now all I would have to do would be to install the codecs and I could even upgrade to the DVD version, once I connected to the internet.

Why would I have to upgrade to the DVD version? Why didn’t it already have every thing already?  Well it’s because it wasn’t just a Live DVD with only one Operating system to try but there was four to choose from.

So with four to choose from, there wasn’t room to fit everything in.

This was fine of course as I was simply happy to have something finally work for me with but I tell ya……that guy Erno is a real jerk!!!

Where did you go…..my lovely?

Sometimes in life things happen and we have no clue how.

About two hours earlier today I was loading up some podcasts to my phone (Linux of course), and then left my house.  I walk down the street to the bus stop and then I see the bus pulling up so I run for it.  I manage to catch the bus and then I sit down and all of a sudden something doesn’t feel right.

Now I just knew I had put my phone in my pocket before I left, but I didn’t feel it  so I looked around my seat, no phone.  I decide to get off the bus and go back home (I figured I just left it on the table in my room so no big deal, meanwhile its nagging me that I had my phone in my pocket when I left.

So I walk back home, and I check my room, once again…..no phone.

Now normally  I would have gotten really really upset, but I really wasn’t this time.  After all, I was going to go back to Best Buy and they would send me a new one in the mail since I was smart enough to get the phone with a warranty.

It wasn’t until I got to the store that the woman from customer service let me know that the warranty only covered damage or phone malfunctions not lost or stolen phone.   Needless to say I was pretty blown then, but only for a little while 🙂

It helps that I had another phone to use, the exact same phone so all I had to do was swap my phone online.   In fact I was doing that while I was working on this post, it really only took a few moments and I was good to go.

Talk about fortunate to have you girl………but I digress, while I was thinking about getting a new phone anyway at least I could do that when I WANT to and not because I HAVE to.

This is another reason I am such an advocate of having a relatively inexpensive phone, that way if something happens to it (which more than likely will eventually happen) you aren’t left out in the cold.

So you don’t have to beg me to stay.  You heard, me so turn me loose!

In case you were wondering, the phone I lost was an LG Optimus V running Android 2.2, and I had unlocked it a couple of weeks ago.

Such a pity!!!!   Hey I am just glad I didn’t have to go through a labyrinth to get where I was trying to go.

But it’s not fair!!!!

Sandy thought she could ruin my day!

Awesome isn’t it!

Earlier today I was talking about the storm called Sandy who managed to rain on everybody’s parade today and will be here for a while.

The rain has been nonstop all day long, and its getting annoying to say the least.  The winds have picked up quite a bit, and my hope is that I will not lose power.

On a lighter note, being stuck in the house all day gave me inspiration to do somethings I have been thinking about lately.

One of the pictures of that you have seen already, but don’t worry cause I’ll keep it comin’ up real soon.

I decided to use a program called Cheese, and despite my lackluster experience with it before on my laptop when recording video, I decided to use it to do pictures.  Maybe even add effects.  Thankfully it wasn’t an EPOC fail!

Don’t believe me?  See for yourself!!!

Upside down and black and white

Yes! Four screens!

Are you wondering how I did the for screens?

Ok, Ok, I will tell you.  But its our little secret and that’s how we should keep it.

Well, I connected my laptop to another monitor that I had by going to…System——->Preferences—–>Monitors.  Once there I had the choice to make the same image appear on both screens.  Then using my desktop I logged onto Facebook, then did the same on my phone.

Keep in mind I am using Ubuntu 10.10 so you may have different options than I do, but I may very well show you how to do this even if you have a newer version of Ubuntu or Linux Mint.  Hmm, that gives me an idea of maybe even more distros in a virtualbox environment.

Oh yeah!  More more for the road

This came out differently than expected but cool anyway!

Now that’s how to turn lemons into lemonade!!!

Sandy, why did you do this to me?

After all that we’ve been through.

At first I was like shoo-wop shoo-wop, my baby! But now I’m like oohhhhhh, Sandy go home, Sandy Sandy go home, Sandy Sandy ggggggggggggggoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now it is raining heavily and apparently the best/worst is yet to come.  Thanks to Frank for that one.

Now for some people this is a wonderful time to rest, to not have to go anywhere and to lounge around the house in leisure.     Sure, I will do that for a while, but eventually I will get restless and want to go outside, yet I wont.    ONLY because I know it isn’t safe.

Yesterday, my uncle called me to make sure I was OK and that was cool.  Then my grandpa called me today as well.  So apparently I have someone to watch over me, and that’s a good thing.  A very good thing.

Something else that is good is that I can do some cleaning up, which for me seems to be a never ending story but at least I am not alone, for I am here with you.  Lol! I know that cheezy but oh well!

It is times like this that I am glad to have so many movies/games to enjoy

I obviously have power and I hope that continues.  I also have food and drink and running water and my family is safe so really there are reasons to be thankful for what I got.

Still, I ask Sandy……why oh why oh why?

Looks like I spoke too soon!

Ok I know I went on a brief rant how a post I was trying to make yesterday just wouldn’t show up where it was supposed to once it was published.  Here it is.

Well a few hours later I decided to try again, and that makes me think of an Aaliyah song even though I was hot like fire with frustration initially.

In case you were wondering that wasn’t the song that I was thinking of either.

Ha ha ha!! I love to quip!

I digress.

So anyways, I decided to just publish the post without the picture and voila! Problem solved.  No one got the eye of the Panda.

Baby you don’t know what you do to me…….

I am proud though because on the second attempt I had the presence of mind to simply cut and paste the post into an email that I sent to myself for safe-keeping.  I had started from scratch and didn’t want to take the chance of having to do it again.

As you can see this is one of many adventures of Captain Obvious!

Will the Quetzal poop on us?

A while back I spoke about the speculation regarding the name of this release, oooh, you thought I was going to spill the beans but I am not going to give it away anymore you are just going to have to look at it for yourself. I will be nice and make it easy to get too though. In fact I will be so nice as to give you another one although, I promise you it won’t be ladies night.

Now lets fast-forward months later and its that time again.  Not hammer time, not tool time, not morphin’ time,  but time for a new arrival to the Ubuntu family.  Ubuntu 12.10 to be specific.

The Quantal Quetzal has landed, I wonder will it just poop on everything, or will it be a wise choice?  Yes, I could go on and on and on and on about the Unity interface, and you would probably say to cry me a river. (believe me I already did)

Yet I choose to be optimistic as it has been a long time since that dreaded by some interface has been default on Ubuntu.

I would love to admit that its getting better getting better all the time but at this point I don’t know, so I ask the question:  What do I do?

Hmm, I’ll answer it for you.  I will check it out in Virtualbox and let you know what I find, actually come to think of it I may even do a video so you can see me run it run it.

So far what I do know about this release (I admit is rather little) is that it features integration with Amazon or something like that lol!! Thus may be something like a phenomenon but we’ll just have to see to find out.

Is there really a reason to be concerned over what will come up when you do your searches?  Could something NSFW or anywhere for that matter pop up unexpectedly?  I sure hope not.

So, be on the lookout for part 2 coming soon

Ok this is annoying!!

I wrote a blog post today and for some reason it just wont show up on here.    It is getting on my nerves as i have never had this happen before.  The post was entitled The Quetzal has landed, will it just poop on everything.

The first time I tried to post it, ended in an epoc fail….yes i said EPOC!!! lol!!!

Oh, and I had to write it over from scratch.

Fortunately, I was able to rewrite it and to be honest, it ended up a lot better than it was at first, so  that was cool.   But then I did it again…oops!! They played with my mind and I am going to stop right there because apparently someone needs somebody with a human touch.

Yes, somebody’s gonna end up with the eye of the panda!!!

Lol!!! Not!!

Anyway I feel so much better now that I got to rant briefly about it.
